Downstream Demand Remains Weak, EMM Production Decreases in January [SMM Analysis]

Published: Jan 24, 2025 15:20
[SMM Analysis: Weak Downstream Demand Leads to Reduced EMM Production in January] SMM data shows that China's EMM production in January 2025 decreased by over 10% MoM but was up approximately 3% YoY. The main reasons for the production decrease in January were as follows: due to weak purchasing enthusiasm from downstream steel mills before the Chinese New Year, the incremental demand for EMM was limited, leading to strong production cut intentions among EMM plants. Production across EMM plants in various regions saw slight declines. Specifically, in Guizhou, due to tight ore supply and equipment maintenance, EMM plants implemented production cuts or shutdowns. In Hunan, rising electricity costs resulted in higher EMM production costs, causing most EMM plants to halt production. Additionally, some EMM plants planned furnace shutdowns and maintenance during the Chinese New Year, further reducing overall EMM supply. In February, the overall operating rate of manganese plants is expected to remain at 70% of capacity. Some EMM plants plan to conduct equipment maintenance around the Chinese New Year, and production is expected to remain reduced. Furthermore, due to the shorter natural month in February, the overall supply in the manganese market is expected to continue decreasing. Based on the production schedule survey of manganese plants, February production is expected to decrease MoM on the supply side.

SMM, January 24: According to SMM data, China's EMM production in January 2025 decreased by over 10% MoM but was up approximately 3% YoY. The main reasons for the production decrease in January were: weak purchasing enthusiasm from downstream steel mills before the Chinese New Year, leading to limited demand growth for EMM, and a strong willingness among EMM plants to cut production. Production in EMM plants across various regions saw slight declines. Specifically, in Guizhou, due to tight ore supply and equipment maintenance, EMM plants reduced or halted production. In Hunan, rising electricity costs led to higher EMM production costs, causing most EMM plants to cease production. Additionally, some EMM plants planned furnace maintenance during the Chinese New Year, further reducing overall EMM supply.

Entering February, the overall operating rate of manganese plants is expected to remain at 70% of capacity. Some EMM plants plan to conduct equipment maintenance around the Chinese New Year, and production is expected to remain reduced. Furthermore, due to the shorter natural month in February, the overall supply in the manganese market is expected to continue decreasing. Based on the production schedule survey of manganese plants, February's production is expected to decrease MoM on the supply side.

Capital-Driven Silicon Metal Prices Trended Stronger After the Holiday with Spot Price Center Shifting Upward [SMM Silicon Industry Weekly Review]
[Capital-Driven Silicon Metal Prices Trend Stronger After Holiday, Spot Price Center Shifts Upward]: The silicon metal market trended stronger after the Labour Day holiday, with the most-traded futures contract breaking through resistance levels to rise above 9,000 yuan/mt. As of the morning of May 7, SMM east China oxygen-blown #553 silicon was at 9,200-9,300 yuan/mt, up 150 yuan/mt WoW. Futures prices continued to trend stronger after the holiday, and silicon suppliers raised spot offer prices multiple times in small incremental probes, with east China #553 silicon offers rising above 9,300 yuan/mt. In the futures market, the SI2609 contract closed at 9,080 yuan/mt on Thursday, up 285 yuan/mt WoW, with an intraday high touching 9,180 yuan/mt. Low-priced sources in the silicon metal market decreased or disappeared, and the transaction center shifted notably higher compared to pre-holiday levels as just-in-time procurement provided support. This round of strengthening was mainly driven by macro and capital momentum, with no substantive bullish support from the industry fundamentals for the time being. From late April to early May, silicon enterprises increasingly hedged in batches on price rallies and sold against the basis, with cargo ownership gradually shifting to futures-spot traders. After futures were pushed higher, spot liquidity issues tended to emerge easily. While futures remained elevated and fundamentals were weak, rigid demand provided support, and spot prices passively followed the upward trend.
